On Sunday, April 14, two men opened fire on Salman Khan’s Bandra house. While the actor and his family were unharmed during the incident, a full-fledged investigation is currently underway. In the last couple of weeks, the Mumbai Police have arrested the accused shooters – Sagar Pal and Vicky Gupta, as well as the two alleged arms suppliers, identified as Sonu Subhash Chander and Anuj Thapan. Gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and his brother Anmol Bishnoi’s names were added to the list of wanted accused following the latter posting a note on Facebook claiming responsibility.

Latest media reports suggest that the Mumbai crime branch has invoked provisions of the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in the case relating to the firing at Khan’s residence in Bandra.

Mumbai police invoke MCOCA

Talking about the same, Joint Commissioner of Police – Crime, Lakhmi Gautam told The Indian Express, “We have invoked the relevant sections of MCOCA against gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and his gang members who are accused in the case. The case will now be transferred to an ACP rank officer for further investigation.” The senior IPS officer added, “This would make the case stronger and it’s been added in the case after due legal assessment.”

A report by news agency ANI states that “All accused have been booked under Sections 3(1)(2), 3(1)(3), and 3(1)(4) of MCOCA.” Another report quoted a police officer saying, “We have applied various sections of the MCOCA on the basis of cases registered against the organised crime syndicate led by the Bishnoi brothers.” Reportedly, the crime branch is also trying to secure custody of Lawrence Bishnoi, who is under arrest in some other case.

Under MCOCA, the arrested accused remains behind bars for a longer period and is not granted bail easily. A crime branch officer stated that MCOCA gives the investigating officer more police custody of the accused. They are also given six months to file a chargesheet.
